What is the Pod Project?
The Pod Project is a community project started in a response to a growing need on a personal level to do something to feel empowered rather than hopeless in the face of the climate emergency.
After lots of talking, research and loads of tea and biscuits (sure isn’t the world fuelled on tea) about what we as individuals can do about climate change, plastic pollution, sustainability, the decline of biodiversity and wellbeing we came up with a plan. At the heart of the plan is working together. There is a growing worldwide movement of community-based initiatives (CBI’s) who believe that communities have more power than we think to make changes for the better on global issues. As Rob Hopkins of the Transition Town Movement says:
“If we wait for the governments, it’ll be too little, too late; if we act as individuals, it’ll be too little; but if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time.” -Rob Hopkins, Transition Towns Movement.
We have drawn up a programme of conversations, presentations and workshops to form the basis of a knowledge sharing, wellbeing and sustainability centre currently based in Donaghcloney, County Down in The Old Cook House. See our Events page for more information.
The aim is to make available as many classes and workshops as we can on wellbeing, essential knowledge and resilience for our most basic needs (energy, food production, shelter) music, storytelling and heritage crafts. For example:
- Wellbeing: Yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, Retreat Days
- Art: Ceramics, Drawing, Printing
- Renewables: solar power, build your own wind turbine
- Basic carpentry
- Repair workshops
- Natural Building Materials: straw bale and cob building
- Biodiversity: Rewilding, planting for nature, trees and hedge planting
- Gardening: permaculture, organic gardening, Edimentals
- Food preparation and storage: bread making, fermentation, foraging
- Heritage Craft: blacksmithing, basket weaving, green wood carpentry
- Storytelling: writing and storytelling
We are launching with introductory classes this year and we intend to provide more in-depth classes going forward that will enable participants to learn and then teach others.
We hope that the programme will spark your interest and you will come and join us. If you would like to get involved as a volunteer, have a skill you want to share or you are looking to learn something new on the topic of sustainability or wellbeing that we don’t currently offer please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
